The High Sheriff of Lancashire 2006-07
For more than 1,000 years High Sheriffs in England and Wales have had
a responsibility for upholding law and order.Duties include attendance at
royal visits to their county, the well being and protection of
Her Majesty's High Court Judges when on Circuit in the county
and attending to them during their legal terms.
The High Sheriff acts as the Returning Officer For Parliamentary
Elections in county constituencies.
Today High Sheriffs work closely with police, probation, local authorities,
education and other agencies to show how young people care for their communities.
Each High Sheriff is appointed for one year only
except in the event of something untoward happening
to the High Sheriff's expected successor when a
High Sheriff must remain in Office until the appointment
of a successor is completed.
The High Sheriff for 2006-07 is Peter Robinson DL. He was appointed by the Queen
after more than 40 years serving the people of the county.
The father-of-two was born in Dalton-in-Furness and educated at
Ulverston Grammar School. He joined Martins (now Barclays) Bank in 1959 and
worked as a manager at branches in Blackpool, Preston and Clitheroe.
In 1990, he was appointed chairman of the Blackburn-with-Darwen Partnership,
overseeing the regeneration of the towns. He is also a deputy lieutenant of Lancashire
and a committee member of the Groundwork Trust.
Mr Robinson was also awarded the Lord Sieff Award for outstanding
contribution to community cohesion in the North West, presented by Business
in the Community.
Mr Robinson lived in Fulwood for five years before moving to Clitheroe with
his wife Jacqui.The couple also enjoy spending time with their two grandchildren.
